On October 16-17, 2024, the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and DBC, represented BAG-INTEL at the RISE-SD 2024 event in Chalkidiki, Greece. While ICCS presented BAG-INTEL’s Secure-by-Design, Hierarchical-Multi-Cloud, IoT-Edge-Cloud Architecture, DBC shed light on legal, privacy, and ethical challenges addressed by our project.

The event was organized by Satways, the Greek Information Technologies Institute (ITI), and the Bulgarian Defence Institute and it featured a rich program with top‐level speakers and presentations and demonstrations of results stemming from several innovative EC-funded projects. The audience included policymakers, researchers, industrial practitioners, among other European security and defense stakeholders.

Brief outline of ICCS’ presentation:

The goal of the BAG-INTEL system is to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of customs controls of incoming baggage at international airports without requiring extra human resources. To achieve this, the BAG-INTEL project partners are designing a secure-by-design architecture. As a principle, Secure-by-Design introduces security measures early in the lifecycle of the system. The aim is to operate natively with the existing airport infrastructure without requiring additional compensating countermeasures. The vision of a Multi-Cloud Continuum, integrating airport operations and airport-located IoT with governmental clouds and the Common European Data Spaces Cloud, somehow contradicts the best practices followed toward achieving the highest security levels: On the one hand, the Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum offers the benefits of elasticity, high-availability, resilience, and scalability while enabling technical and business convergence; On the other hand, security standards for Information Security Management Systems mandate segregation and development of zones and conduits. To remove this contradiction, our Hierarchical model of the Multi-Cloud, IoT-Edge-Cloud Architecture, through its hierarchy of clouds, achieves to define a Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum where security zones are defined. The native layering approach of Hierarchical, Multi-Cloud, IoT-Edge-Cloud Architecture allows to propose Defense-in-Depth architectural designs, providing multiple security protections in a layered manner, delaying or preventing an attack on the system. Through its optimized-for-security designs, our Secure-by-Design architecture reduces the attack surface, minimizing the interfaces of the system that can be accessed and exposed.

DBC's presentation at RISE-SD

Brief outline of DBC’s presentation:

The presentation covered the legal, privacy, and ethical challenges that the BAG-INTEL project faces due to its nature, the project-related activities, and the framework to be developed. It also outlined the implemented mitigation measures to avoid any potential legal or ethical issues, alongside the actions taken to anticipate them.

The presented slides are available here

The audience was particularly interested in privacy aspects addressed in the presented projects and keen to learn more about BAG-INTEL’s approach.
