On October 30, 2024, BAG-INTEL project partners participated in a webinar titled “Use of AI in Border Security,” which attracted a varied audience eager to understand how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can transform various aspects of border security operations to improve safety, efficiency, and transparency.
The event, organised by the I-SEAMORE project delved into the transformative role of AI in enhancing border security and featured insights from industry leaders participating in I-SEAMORE and other related projects, including BAG-INTEL, ODYSSEUS, and FLEXI-Cross. With an agenda filled with insightful presentations delivered by renowned experts, this 1.5 hour webinar provided a comprehensive overview of AI’s role in border controls, customs operations, and maritime operations.
Key Presentations
I-SEAMORE: AI Solutions for Maritime Security
Gregor Pavlin from Thales Group shed light on AI-based solutions designed to improve situation awareness in maritime settings. Pavlin outlined the primary motivations for using AI in maritime security, the various AI techniques integrated into I-SEAMORE, and approaches to building trustworthy AI systems that can be evaluated effectively. This segment underscored the pressing need for advanced and reliable technologies in maritime operations.
ODYSSEUS: AI-Driven Decision Support Systems in Border Security
Philippos Orfanoudakis of SQD spoke about ODYSSEUS, a project leveraging AI-driven decision support systems (DSS) to facilitate smooth and secure border crossing. He highlighted the role of Explainable AI (XAI) in making decision-making processes more transparent and understandable for border authorities, alongside the benefits for travelers, such as reduced wait times and improved security measures.
BAG-INTEL: Transforming Customs Operations at International Airports
The BAG-INTEL coordinator, Henrik Larsen from Legind Technologies introduced BAG-INTEL and its AI-powered customs solution aimed at transforming incoming baggage customs controls at international airports. Henrik’s presentation covered the project’s operational scenario and the added value of the BAG-INTEL AI-supported detection and risk assessment features.
