BAG-INTEL and the Global Standard for Smarter Customs

The technical world of BAG-INTEL research may sound abstract, but at its heart, it’s all about creating seamless, safer processes that work everywhere. That’s why standards are so critical—they will help ensure our cutting-edge technology can be implemented on the ground, in places like major international airports.

Listening to the experts: What’s needed?

Mark Miller of CPT

To bridge the gap between innovation and installation, our standardization team conducted a survey as part of the Deliverable 6.3. They wanted to hear directly from the industry: Are existing standards enough to handle BAG-INTEL’s next-generation detection and imaging systems?

The survey was essential for demystifying the current landscape. The team found that most experts feel the current standards are sufficient to address the requirements of the civil aviation systems already in place. However, the world of security technology is always evolving.

The road ahead: Open architecture and real-world testing

What is genuinely exciting is an active industry push for an Open Architecture imaging standard, often discussed in relation to evolving the DICOS standard. This new framework, championed by the European Organization for Security Scanning and Security Detection Systems working group, could revolutionize how detection systems communicate and share data.

The potential is significant: this imaging standard could be the foundation for a follow-on initiative to BAG-INTEL—a critical step toward universalizing our project innovations.

Impact in Action: A look behind the scenes

To ground the standardization team’s findings, the BAG-INTEL consortium met in October 2025 for a full site visit to Milan’s Malpensa Airport. This was not just a meeting; it was a chance to see the real operational environment—the detection systems, the baggage handling areas—and to plan for a later BAG-INTEL demonstration. Critically, it was an opportunity to see how standards have (or haven’t yet) been implemented in a high-stakes, real-world setting.

Want to dive deeper into the current state of play? We invite you to read our BAG-INTEL Deliverable D6.3 for the full breakdown of the relevant standards and survey results. The conversation isn’t over: we look forward to providing a standards update and a more detailed survey as part of Deliverable D6.4 later in the project.
