RISE-SD 2024

October 16 - October 17

Chalkdiki, Greece

The goal of the Research and Innovation Symposium for European SECURITY and Defense 2024 (RISE-SD) is to provide a unique forum for disseminating scientific results, support knowledge exchange, and create networking and clustering opportunities for security stakeholders of EU-funded projects in security and defense.

Live demonstrations will take place on the last day of RISE-SD 2024, presenting technological solutions developed in the context of the co-organizing EU RDI projects. The participants will have the opportunity to interact with systems developers and researchers and learn more about innovative solutions developed by European researchers with the support of the European Commission.

Besides, the Symposium will boost cooperation among scientific organizations, SMEs and the European security Industry, security and defense practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders. The objective is to ensure a successful market uptake of all the positive outcomes of European research in security matters.

Two BAG-INTEL project partners, Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (Greece) and DBC diadikasia (Greece) will present the project at the event. While ICCC will present BAG-INTEL’s Secure-by-Design, Hierarchical-Multi-Cloud, IoT-Edge-Cloud Architecture, DBC will shed light on Legal, Privacy, and Ethical Challenges Addressed by BAG-INTEL.

Brief abstract 1: The goal of the BAG-INTEL system is to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of customs controls of incoming baggage at international airports without the need of involving extra human resources. By providing robust AI-based information utilization and decision support tools, BAG-INTEL will support the stakeholders of the project (primarily Customs, Police, and Airport Operators) in the detection of baggage containing contraband in a rapid and effective manner. As a result, more contraband will be detected and the cases of unnecessary manual inspections not leading to finding contraband will decrease.

Brief abstract 2: In this presentation, the presenters will refer to the legal, privacy, and ethical challenges that the BAG-INTEL project faces due to its nature, the project-related activities, and the framework to be developed. They will also point out the mitigation measures implemented to avoid any potential legal or ethical issues, alongside the actions taken to anticipate them.
