BAG-INTEL joined forces with three other EC-funded projects—I-SEAMORE, ODYSSEUS, and FLEXI-Cross—to organise a webinar exploring the ethical and societal implications of security technologies in border management. This collaborative event brought together 60 international experts to address challenges and opportunities in aligning security innovations with legal, societal, and ethical standards.
After a round of brief introductions of the four projects delivered by the respective Project Coordinators, the first session took place, featuring the following presentations:
- AI Act and its implications for border security technologies by ODYSSEUS’ Marina Andeva
- Ethics risk assessment and mitigation strategies by FLEXI-cross’ Ioana Cristina Cotoi
- Public trust and citizen engagement in maritime border security by I-SEAMORE’s Lorenzo De Sabbata
- And Ethical challenges in AI-powered baggage screening by BAG-INTEL’s Henrik Larsen and Javier Valls-Prieto
BAG-INTEL’s Contribution
BAG-INTEL was represented by Henrik Larsen (Legind Technologies, Denmark), the BAG-INTEL Project Coordinator, and Javier Valls-Prieto (University of Granada, Spain), the legal and ethics expert. The first part of their presentation provided an overview of the operational context and the solution that’s being developed by the project. The second part focused on the ethical issues addressed by BAG-INTEL. The presentation underscored BAG-INTEL’s focus on end-user engagement in technology development and demonstrated how ethical principles are embedded into the project’s work for smarter and more efficient customs controls. The presentation can be found here.
Interactive Discussions
The second part of the workshop featured three breakout sessions where participants engaged in in-depth discussions on:
- Legal and regulatory frameworks for ethical border technologies.
- Societal challenges and ethical dilemmas such as privacy and bias.
- Practical solutions for integrating ethical principles into border operations.
This event exemplifies BAG-INTEL’s commitment to fostering collaboration and advancing the ethical and societal dimensions of innovations in the border management domain.
