While the BAG-INTEL project advances AI-powered solutions for customs operations, a quieter but equally crucial effort is taking place behind the scenes—ensuring that innovation is guided by robust legal and ethical standards.

A key part of this work is the Video Surveillance Monitoring Questionnaire, recently shared with pilot leaders across the project. This tool plays a central role in assessing whether the deployment of video surveillance technologies at pilot airports complies with privacy regulations and ethical safeguards.

What’s the purpose of the monitoring process?

The BAG-INTEL project involves real-world testing of advanced systems, including AI-supported video analytics in airport environments. These activities naturally raise privacy considerations, especially when surveillance equipment may capture footage of individuals or sensitive areas.

To address this, the project’s ethics and legal team launched a monitoring process to track how each pilot site manages data protection, transparency, and accountability. This process helps identify potential risks and ensures that all partners comply with both national laws and EU data protection standards, including the GDPR. By collecting this information, the team can document how ethical principles are applied in practice—reinforcing BAG-INTEL’s commitment to responsible innovation.

What’s next?

The data from the questionnaire will inform a dedicated deliverable, further strengthening the project’s ethical documentation. More importantly, it supports a culture of reflection and responsibility across all technical and operational layers. The Video Surveillance Monitoring Questionnaire is just one example of how BAG-INTEL bridges cutting-edge technology with ethical accountability across all pilot sites.

Stay tuned as we share more insights from our pilot activities in the coming months.
