BAG-INTEL Use Case II: Updates from Thessaloniki Airport (SKG)

We are excited to share some significant progress from Use Case II at Thessaloniki “Makedonia” Airport (SKG). This use case is a key part of our project, focusing on the full demonstration of the BAG-INTEL system. In Thessaloniki, the physical installation of an X-ray/CT scanner and the deployment of multiple cameras that support the re-identification system will been installed, supported by a bag tag reader and the airport’s digital twin model. Our goal is to simulate various scenarios and demonstrate the system’s full capability.

Cameras and Data Collection Underway

BAG-INTEL Use Case II: Updates from Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) - camera installation outdoor

A crucial step in our preparatory work is the installation of cameras and the collection of video data. We are currently in the process of completing the cabling and camera installation at SKG. These cameras serve a dual purpose: they are essential for the initial data collection and will later be used for the final demonstration of the BAG-INTEL solution.

The data we are collecting consists of video footage of luggage in different areas of the airport. This footage is vital for training two key AI models:

  • Luggage Detection Model: This model will learn to identify and locate luggage within video frames.
  • Luggage Re-identification Model: This model will track specific pieces of luggage across different camera views and environments.

Our project partners, including Fraport Greece, CEA, and PSI, have been on-site at SKG to manage the camera placement. We are also working closely with Fraport Greece’s legal team to ensure all data collection is fully compliant with GDPR regulations.

The cameras are strategically placed at three key checkpoints to provide comprehensive coverage:

  • External Area: For initial luggage detection.
  • Baggage Claim Conveyor Belt: For preliminary re-identification.
  • Customs Inspection Area: For the main re-identification checkpoint.

Next Steps: Preparing for the Demonstration

All this preparatory work is building toward our main event: a real-life demonstration planned for March 2026. This demonstration will showcase the fully integrated BAG-INTEL architecture, including all our designed subsystems.

Leading up to the demo, we have several important tasks:

  • Ensuring the airport’s infrastructure and network elements are ready.
  • A feasibility study for the scanner installation is currently in progress.
  • An additional conveyor belt is being prepared to feed luggage into the scanner.

The final demonstration will bring together the IoT infrastructure, the newly installed cameras, and an XCT-scanner to show how our system can track luggage seamlessly and efficiently in a real-world airport environment. This will be a significant milestone for the project, and we look forward to sharing more updates as we move closer to the demonstration date!
