On April 22, 2026, BAG-INTEL together with CustomAI and SAUST projects co-organized a webinar addressing the technical and operational challenges of modern customs. The event, “Building an Integrated Security Ecosystem: Advancing Detection Across the Global Trade and Transit Continuum,” served as a vital bridge between cutting-edge research and the practical needs of international border management.
A Forum for International Agencies
The key feature of the session was the high level of engagement from the institutional community. The webinar attracted a diverse international audience, with a significant presence from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and representatives of various national customs authorities.
A highlight of the session included special remarks by Sergio Morano (Frontex), which underscored the importance of aligning European research consortia with the operational mandates of law enforcement agencies. The Q&A and panel segments saw active participation from agency representatives, focusing on:
- Operational Viability: How new technologies can be integrated into high-pressure, high-volume environments without stalling trade.
- Response to Evolving Threats: Discussing the changing landscape of smuggling and the necessary responses from both tech developers and border guards.
- Interagency Cooperation: The need for standardized data-sharing frameworks to connect independent systems across international borders.
Three Projects, One Integrated Mission
The webinar featured presentations by the three organizing projects, which demonstrated how their specialized technologies form a comprehensive defense across the transit continuum:
- SAUST (Vapor-Based Screening): Automated, non-intrusive detection of chemical signatures for explosives and narcotics in baggage.
- BAG-INTEL (AI Decision Support): Advanced analytics to assist customs officers in targeted baggage selection at inland airports.
- CustomAI (Multi-Modal Intelligence): An AI toolkit optimized for high-volume environments, validated for maritime containers and postal parcels.
Panel discussions, moderated by Kanî Jaff (Futuro Perfecto), focused on the transition from “raw signals” (like vapor or X-ray data) to “actionable intelligence,” ensuring that customs officers receive prioritized alerts rather than unmanageable data streams.
Join the Discussion Next Week: Session Two
Building on the collaborative momentum of the first webinar, the projects will host a second session specifically focused on the logistics and postal sectors. This event will feature insights into how AI and sensors can be embedded into existing infrastructure to meet 2026 security requirements.
The Next Frontier in Postal Security: AI, Sensors, and Logistics Intelligence
